Photography Tour

28 May 2023

Cairns, Port Douglas, Daintree World Heritage, Cape Tribulation,

Atherton Tableland Rainforest & Waterfalls, Kuranda, Great Barrier Reef

Day 1 –  Port Douglas

This tour starts in Cairns. I pick you up at 2pm from the Cairns CDB or northern beaches.  We head north along the stunningly scenic Captain Cook Highway to Port Douglas with the ocean on one side and the mountains and rainforest on the other.

After settling into our accommodation, we head out to explore and photograph the surrounds of Port Douglas.  Golden hour is a great time to photograph the tour boats returning from the reef, the iconic St Mary’s by the Sea chapel and the heritage listed Sugar Wharf.

DAY 2 – Cape Tribulation- Daintree National Park

Sunrise shoot along the beach at Port Douglas before we continue north through the cane fields and rainforest to the Daintree River.  Here we drive onto the barge that takes across the river and into the Daintree National Park.

We will visit the Daintree Discovery Centre and learn about the rainforest and it’s inhabitants.  The number of wildlife and plant species in the Daintree Rainforest really is incredible so as we wander beneath the lush canopies, keep your eyes peeled so you don’t miss a wildlife-spotting opportunity. With more than 400 bird species we will be kept busy looking for them too.  There are great nature board walks and rainforest clad beaches to explore as well.  Tonight we stay at Cape Tribulation the only place where two world heritage sites meet.  It has gorgeous cabins, swimming pool, restaurant and bar all set amongst their 7 acres of rainforest and a private beach.

DAY 3 – Daintree River Village

This morning we can do a sunrise shoot at the beach or relax to the sounds of the rainforest before heading to the restaurant for breakfast.  We spend more time in Daintree rainforest photographing freshwater streams and wandering along rainforest walks.  In the afternoon we head out of the national park to Daintree Village in preparation for our private sunset photography cruise looking for crocs and birds on the Daintree River.  Overnight in Daintree Village.

DAY 4 – Lake Eacham

As birds are usually more active in the morning we are going to venture back onto the river for a couple of hours this morning.   After our cruise we will make our way up into the Atherton Tablelands via Mt Molloy and Mareeba.

We will photograph landscapes, birds and wildlife along the way. In the afternoon we arrive at our next two nights’ accommodation at Chambers Wildlife Rainforest Lodge near Lake Eacham. It is hidden in 1200 acres of Lake Eacham's lush, tropical highland rainforest in the beautiful Waterfalls and Crater Lakes district of the Atherton Tablelands. They specifically cater for birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts, naturalists, photographers and all those who want to have a true rainforest experience.

The resort includes a 1.3km rainforest walking path to Platypus ponds, Brush Turkey mounds, and Tooth billed Bowerbird stages.  They also have a Wildlife Viewing Platform that is illuminated until 11pm for guests to view Sugar Gliders, Striped Possums, Bandicoots, Melomys, Antechinus.

DAY 5 – Lake Eacham

Today we have lots to explore around the rainforest lodge. Later we can drive through the rainforest to capture some beautiful waterfall images and visit crater lakes.  It will be another big day and I’m sure we will all be excited to return to our nights’ accommodation amongst the rainforest at the Lodge.

DAY 6 – Kuranda & Cairns

Wake up to the sound of the rainforest and see what images we can capture in the grounds of the lodge.

After checkout it’s time to head back to Cairns via Kuranda where we can visit the Butterfly Sanctuary and Bird World for some wonderful close-up bird and butterfly shots.  Tonight we stay in Cairns.

DAY 7 – Great Barrier Reef & Cairns

Today we set sail to Michaelmas Cay on the Great Barrier Reef on a beautiful sailing catamaran.  We can snorkel or dive on the reef filled with vibrant marine life, plus spend time observing and photographing the seabirds that call this protected sanctuary home.  It’s a full day with a Marine Biologist presentation, coral viewing tour, snorkelling equipment, buffet lunch and more.  Tonight we will have our farewell dinner in Cairns.
